Hridoy turns Day 3 on its head in Sylhet
Towhid Hridoy staged one of the great lower-order escapes in recent Test cricket on Day 3 of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet on 7 November 2026. Batting with the tail after Bangladesh had slipped to 184 for 7, Towhid Hridoy 242 not out became the innings that carried Bangladesh to 386 in reply to West Indies' 356.
That gave Bangladesh a 30-run first-innings lead. Bad light then ended the day early with West Indies 7 without loss in their second innings (Brandon King 5 not out, Joshua Da Silva 2 not out from four overs), still 23 runs behind. The position follows Hasan Mahmud's 6 for 90 on Day 2, which had earlier bowled West Indies out for 356. Series scores are on our Bangladesh vs West Indies Test series 2026 results page.
A record innings, built with the last two wickets
ESPNcricinfo's Mohammad Isam reported that Hridoy became only the fourth Bangladesh batter to score a Test double-hundred, after Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. His 242 not out is now Bangladesh's highest individual Test score, passing Mushfiqur's 219 not out against Zimbabwe in 2018.
The innings was loaded with records:
- Hridoy scored 213 runs on the third day, beating Shakib's Bangladesh record of 212 runs in a single day, set in Wellington in 2017.
- He struck 11 sixes, one short of the world record shared by Wasim Akram and Yashasvi Jaiswal, and more than any previous Bangladesh batter in a Test innings (he passed Tamim's mark with his eighth six).
- The Business Standard reported 22 fours as well, and 154 runs in boundaries, another Bangladesh record.
- When he reached 172, it was the highest Test score at Sylhet, beating Mahmudul Hasan Joy's 171 against Ireland last year.
He reached his double-hundred with a single off Jomel Warrican in the fourth over after tea. Bangladesh were effectively a batter short throughout: opener Shadman Islam injured his left ankle on the first morning and was listed as absent hurt.
From 184 for 7 to a 30-run lead
The morning still belonged to West Indies. Warrican had Mushfiqur (34) and Litton Das caught at cover in consecutive overs. Justin Greaves ran from slip to catch Mehidy Hasan Miraz's paddle sweep. When Warrican removed Hasan Mahmud for 1, Bangladesh were 184 for 7 and staring at a deficit of more than 150.
Hridoy then added 202 runs for the last two wickets. He put on 117 for the eighth wicket with Taijul Islam, who made 22 from 56 balls and was stumped off Warrican. Taskin Ahmed helped add the rest before top-edging Jayden Seales to fine leg for 12. Bangladesh were all out for 386.
Warrican was West Indies' most successful bowler with 4 for 104 from 41 overs. Seales took 2 for 58. West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test in Mirpur.
What Day 4 will decide
West Indies begin Day 4, scheduled for Sunday 8 November 2026 in Sylhet, only 23 runs in arrears with all 10 second-innings wickets in hand. The fifth day is Monday 9 November if needed. After Hridoy's intervention, Bangladesh have a narrow lead to defend; West Indies still have a platform to set a fourth-innings target.
