Mahmud’s six-for, then WI seamers strike back

Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud took 6 for 90 on day two of the 2nd Test against West Indies in Sylhet (5–9 November 2026), helping bowl the visitors out for 356. By stumps Bangladesh were 88 for 3, still trailing by 268 runs, after West Indies’ seamers removed the top order in the evening session.

ESPNcricinfo’s Mohammad Isam and ICC’s match wrap both led on Mahmud’s spell and the visitors’ reply with the ball. It was Mahmud’s fifth Test five-wicket haul and, per Cricinfo’s framing, his first at home — putting him in rare company for taking early career five-fors across different countries.

How West Indies reached 356

Overnight batter Amir Jangoo turned his century into 133 off 212 (13 fours, two sixes) before Mahmud’s second new-ball delivery swung back into the left-hander’s off bail. Next ball Mahmud had Roston Chase caught behind; a hat-trick appeal for lbw against Joshua Bishop was overturned on review for inside edge. Bishop was later stumped off Mahmud with Litton Das standing up.

Kevin Wickham (61) and Justin Greaves had earlier built with Jangoo. From 264 for 4 West Indies slid to 301 for 8, yet the lower order still added useful runs — last pair Jayden Seales and Jomel Warrican put on 33 in more than eleven overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two wickets around Mahmud’s sixth.

Bangladesh’s reply: injury and early wickets

Opener Shadman Islam was stretchered off with an ankle injury while fielding at the start of the day; his availability for the rest of the Test was uncertain. Bangladesh opened with spinner Nayeem Hasan for the first time in Tests — he lasted six balls, edging Seales.

Tanzid Hasan was tied down through maidens then toe-ended Greaves to cover, where Wickham took a diving catch. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 18 off 65 before Shamar Joseph seamed one away to hit off stump. Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy (Hridoy dropped on 12 by Warrican) were unbeaten when bad light ended play early, with Hridoy on 29 and Mushfiqur on 19 in the Cricinfo card.

Series context for Indian readers

West Indies won the 1st Test in Mirpur by eight wickets. Our Sylhet preview explained the WTC angles and Mominul’s absence. Another WI win would tighten pressure on Bangladesh’s championship points and keep the Caribbean side in the conversation on the WTC table that India are also chasing.

Days three to five will decide whether Mahmud’s six-for becomes a footnote to a WI win or the start of a Bangladesh fightback from 268 behind.

What to watch on days three to five

  1. Shadman’s ankle — if he cannot bat, Bangladesh’s already thin top order loses another specialist.
  2. Mushfiqur–Hridoy — they must turn the unbeaten stand into a full session; another early collapse would leave WI hunting a two-day finish.
  3. Second new ball / spin — Sylhet can help seam early and grip later; Warrican and the WI quicks will rotate plans if the pitch flattens.
  4. Lead management — even a Bangladesh recovery to within 100 still leaves WI a platform to bat Bangladesh out of the game.

Mahmud’s 6 for 90 keeps him in the match narrative either way. Pacers who take six on home soil after a series deficit often become the selection anchor for the next cycle; the result around him will decide whether this spell is remembered as a solo or as the start of a levelled series.
